Bajrang Punia Becomes World’s Top-Ranked Freestyle Wrestler in the 65kg category

Asian Games gold medalist Wrestler Bajrang Punia has exhibited himself as the challengable superstar of Indian Wrestling.

Bajrang Punia included further attribute in his profession. He heads the 65kg chart with 96 points an immense 30-point lead over his runner-up Alejandro Enrique Valdes Tobier of Cuba. Due to this achievement he clinched the position of world’s top-ranked freestyle wrestler in the 65kg category by beating Japan’s Daichi Takatani 11-8 in the final bout. He received the gold medal in the 65 kg freestyle wrestling for his glorious performance.

24-year-old wrestler Bajrang Punia hails from Khudan village of Jhajjar district in the state of Haryana was guided by Olympian wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt. He began wrestling at the age of seven and was stimulated to pursue the sport by his father. He used to work as Traveling Ticket Examiner (TTE) with Indian Railway and his family requested Deputy Superintendent of police post with Haryana Police.

He prevail five medals including Commonwealth Games and Asian Games gold and silver at the World Championship with 96 points which plunged highest number in the ranking table announced by United World Wrestling. It turned out to be a spectacular performance by him.

There were the days he knew exactly what will be served on his plate when he return back to his place from practice and used to eat the same food for dinner. He was surviving on milk and Chapati. Wrestling vanished his struggling life.

He approached into the Games after winning three tournaments – Commonwealth Games, Tbilisi Grand Prix and Yasar Dogu International – which made him the ideal in his category. The Asian Games gold medal made him a national icon.

In 2013 Asian Championships in New Delhi, he achieved bronze in the semifinals sessions in the 60 kg category. He again achieved bronze in the World Championships in Budapest.

In 2014 he won the silver medal in the men’s freestyle 61 kg category, after losing 1-4 to Canadian in Glasgow, Scotland.

He is the single Indian male to figure in top-10 but the country has five female wrestlers who are in top-10 bracket in their respective categories. He was awarded Arjuna award in 2015.

In 2016 Singapore, Commonwealth Championship, Bajrang Clinched Gold Medal.

In 2017 he won the gold medal at the Asian Wrestling Championship held at Delhi.

In 2018 he won the gold medal in the men’s freestyle 65 kg category.

He won a silver medal at the 2018 World Championships in Budapest, losing to the Japanese Takuto Otoguro in the summit clash.

Achieving both Commonwealth and Asian Games Gold this year, he is possibly India’s leading male freestyle wrestler.

Currently, he is preparing for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
