Recently, Olympic medal-winning boxer Mary Kom outlined a letter to her three sons in which she mentioned that she has been sexually assaulted thrice in her teens. Once in Manipur and then again while she was out with her friends in Delhi and Haryana’s Hissar.
Mary Kom encountered the contingency at the age of 17 when she was on her way to her training camp at 8.30 in the morning in a cycle rickshaw. A stranger abruptly pounced her and hit her breast. She jumped off the rickshaw, holding her slipper in her hand and tried to chase him. She strived her best but failed to catch him. She could have able to seize him if she would have well versed in karate at that time.
She wrote letter to her son just to instruct them to respect women and their rights. She conveyed her review over women’s welfare in India and encouraged them to join physical fitness training to repel attackers. She also mentioned that Rape is not about sex, it is only about a lost sensation of capability and retaliation. She got an opportunity to be in the august house of the Rajya Sabha. She ensured to create awareness about sexual crimes against women.
She ended her letter mentioning to her sons Respect women when they say ‘No’. Don’t stalk them to death because they have said ‘No’
Let’s create a save environment where girls can walk on without fear and they are respected and appreciated for their achievements. We should also ensure that they have enough freedom to be able to choose well and can explore their choice and decisions.
