It is widely believed that nearly everyone lies on a regular basis. Trust is an important cornerstone of a successful marriage. Lies between partners can put a strain on the relationship, and complicate domestic life. Here are some reasons your spouse might lie, signs that you are being lied to, and what you can do about the lies and lying.
COMMON REASONS PEOPLE LIE
• To avoid being embarrassed
• To avoid conflict
• To make themselves look good
• To supposedly protect someone’s feelings
• To make themselves look good
• To be in control of a situation
• To make themselves appear more successful, special, or talented than they really are
POSSIBLE SIGNS OF LYING
Knowing when someone is lying to you isn’t always easy, but it’s important to spot- because even tiny untruths can slowly erode a relationship. The tricky part is that people who lie a lot are usually better at it than people who hardly ever lie- so if you’re dating someone who’s a cool and collected liar, you might not realize that they’re doing it even when you think you’ve caught them, they may do a damn good job of taking you out of it. Luckily, there are some signs that may help give away the habits of even the greatest of liars.
• They touch their face
People who are lying will often touch or cover their face and mouth. It’s may seem like a weird side effect of lying, but some researchers think that touching their face is a distancing mechanism between the liar and what they’re saying. It’s a way to deal with any lingering guilt that may be surfacing. So, if there’s a lot of face petting and you can’t quite put your finger on why, it may be that you’ve caught them in an untruth.
• They put on a fake smile
People find it easier to control the bottom half of their face, a fake smile usually doesn’t show around the eyes. It’s easy to slap on a grin, even when we’re having a terrible time, but it’s much harder to make our eyes fake it . They may be trying to give you a reassuring smile or get you to laugh and move along, but their eyes will be telling a very different story. If you’ve been together for a long time, you’ll probably know the real thing when you see it.
• Include ‘Honesty’ words
If phrases like trust me, honestly and just to be honest….sound like your partner is trying too hard, you might be right. Experts says that these sorts of phrases can actually be a sign of lying. When people use these bolstering statements to emphasises their honesty, there’s a good chance they are hiding something.
• Look for excessive blinking
This may occur when you start talking to him about an uncomfortable topic. If you are talking to your spouse about something he is lying about, he may start to panic occasionally the lying spouse may actually slow down his blink rate going into the lie and speed it up afterwards.
• They won’t give you a straight answer
If your partner has been lying to you, they also might not give you a straight answer when you ask them questions about where they’ve been or what they’ve been up to.Experts says, “they sometimes garble answer, they repeat your question in their answer, they are vague and defensive, or they avoid a discussion” altogether.
• Their body language is off
A change in your partners body language or odd patterns in their nonverbal communication could also be a sign that they’re lying to you. According to experts, the specific body language to look out for is when they “ avoid eye contact their body is pointed away from you, they cover their mouth,” and overall, “ they act strange and nervous.”
• Sudden sweetness
An unexpected increase in compliments, gifts or sweet moments can be the sign of a guilty conscience . Your spouse feels guilty for lying to you, so they attempt to ease their own nagging conscience by making it up to you. They might give you gifts for no apparent reason or spend more on a birthday or anniversary than usual. Your spouse did something nice for you is joy proof that they are hiding something, but sudden changes in behaviour are always something you should notice.
Other than these, there are some more basic signs that can be easily misread and misinterpreted.
• Rubbing their brows
• Lack of pronouns while talking
• Lack of finger pointing
• Partial shrug
• Rigidity or fidgeting
• Slouching posture
• Being hesitant
• Unwillingness to touch spouse during a conversation
• Inconsistencies in what is being shared
• Saying no several times.
It’s really difficult to admit that your partner is lying to you-especially if they won’t do it themselves. But it’s important to recognise the signs and know when it’s happening to you.
